STEM Education
ANSEP is a program that serves to recruit and retain Alaska Native students into science and engineering and help them attain leadership roles in related professions.
Utilizing a comprehensive suite of programming, ANSEP creates empowerment and excitement around careers in engineering and science. Programs include the following:
Pre-College Program
Participating students assemble a top-end computer, which they can keep by completing courses in trigonometry, physics and chemistry. In addition to assembling the computers, students learn to use AutoCAD, MS Office, GIS, and other appropriate software relating to STEM careers. To expedite the process, ANSEP offers accelerated summer courses in the required math and science courses.
Summer Bridge
Summer Bridge is for recent high school graduates planning to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage. Students participate in campus orientation and team building activities and take a college level math course designed to help prepare them for their first college semester. In addition, each student serves as an engineering or science intern with one of ANSEP’s partner organizations in Anchorage, or alternatively, students can opt for a field-based internship outside of Anchorage.
University and Graduate Success
Participating Students are co-enrolled in classes; required to participate in organized study groups and peer and professional mentoring; required to complete research projects; required to work summer internships, and can participate in planned group social activities.
