Endangered Places
In 2013, the Keku Cannery in Kake was designated as one of the Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Once providing many jobs to the town, now the cannery building is filled with old equipment, including a vintage Kake Fire Department engine. The cannery closed more than 30 years ago, and unfortunately is not in very good condition now. If the cannery collapses, in addition to the community losing a historic landmark, the asbestos and other hazardous materials that would be released could impact the community’s subsistence practices. Weathervane Strategies is working with the Organized Village of Kake on funding for their plans to stabilize the cannery.
